Koutoubia Marrakech
Located just to the South of Jema al fna the Koutoubia mosque was built in the twelfth century. Its Minaret is THE landmark in Marrakech. Originally built by the Almohads it is much admired for its perfect proportions and symmetry, the Minaret was beautifully restored for the millennium and is now floodlit at night.
In common with almost all mosques in Morocco the Koutoubia mosque is closed to non muslims. Adjacent to the mosque are archaeological remains of the original mosque which it is believed was rebuilt to correct its orientation to Mecca. These remains are accessible to visitors and can be seen through glazed protective cases. The fabulous Rose gardens adjacent to the Mosque are an oasis of calm in the city used by locals and tourists alike, a must for your Marrakech holiday!
Route to Gueliz
The Avenue Mohammed V, the principal Avenue of the Gueliz new town, runs from the Medina through the heart of the commercial district. Koutobia dominates the skyline to the east and the peak of the Atlas Mountains rise to the West. On a clear day it is easy to navigate on the avenue with both these imposing landmarks visible.
