Marrakech Riad are delighted to support Events for Namuwongo a fantastic example of an industry getting together to give back- in this case to a slum community in Uganda.

At a Charity Auction on 22nd May 2012 two short breaks to our Marrakech Riads raised more than £7,200 a useful contribution to the fantastic £80,000 raised on the night. As always our thanks go to the generous bidders who made this possible- we will make sure you have a fabulous time in Magical Marrakech.

Giving back has its benefits! a great time was had by all on the night, a particular highlight was Jeremy Clarkson’s performance on drums! (Clarkson does a great deal of under appreciated charity work- good for him!)  Special thanks also to our friends at The Brewery who donated the venue.

We are proud to support the African Space Trust a charity registered in the UK committed to supporting sustainable development in sub saharan africa.

A short break at Riad Papillon will be a star prize at the African Space fund raising Quiz night on Friday 29th June 2012.

In the 11th century Marrakech was the Capital of the Almoravid dynasty and issued its own currency. The square silver coins (to the left on the image above) are from this period.  The round coins to the right are a currency that circulated in Marrakech three centuries later.

All these coins are silver, note how many of them have been clipped to harvest a little of the precious metal, a practice  also seen in mediavel coins in Europe.

Coins such as these are still to be found in the Souks of Marrakech. If you are planning a visit to the Red City stay with us in one of our Riad Boutique hotels and experience the hospitality of the medina at first hand.  Visit our Frequently Asked Questions For information on the Dirham, the modern currency of Morocco and advice on how best to change money .

Recently opened cafe on located on Riad Larrouss street, one of the main north-south routes through the Marrakech old town.

A series of comfortable salons on various levels but what’s really special about this place is the panoramic roof terrace with 360 degree views around the medina and across to the Ben Youssef Mosque from which the Cafe takes its names.

Basic Moroccan fare, simply presented at reasonable prices. This tidy little restaurant is just a short walk from our Riad Cinnamon.

Mama Afrika is a cool place to hang out in the new town of Marrakech, located just of the Boulevard Mohamed V in the Rue Oum Errabbi.

There is a tempting menu of fruit juices and cocktails as well as hot drinks.  The food offering is limited to sandwiches and ice creams.

Lively music, sometimes featuring live reggae bands. The Cafe is regularly enjoyed by locals and visitors to Marrakech alike.  It is open all day- from 8am until late –   Mama Afrika is usually still very lively at 11 pm and offers an energy filled but alcohol free alternative to the bars in the same neighbourhood.

Arriving by road could not be easier for guests at our Marrakech Riad hotels.

We recommend using supervised parking at the entrance to the old town medina where your vehicle will be looked over by the dependable ‘guardians’ night and day for a modest charge.

Our staff will be pleased to meet you at a landmark location such as the well know Dar El Bashah Palace or the Koutobia Mosque and escort you to the parking, or if you are visiting Marrakech for the first time we can arrange for a driver to meet you on the outskirts of town for the same charge as an airport pickup.

After leaving your vehicle you will be escorted on foot through the narrow streets of the old town directly to the door of Riad PapillonRiad CinnamonRiad Star or Dar Habiba. We can even arrange to have  delicious meal waiting for your arrival evening.

The Talaa Cafe is an inexpensive and very pleasant establishment near to the Marrakech Museum just opposite the entrance to the souk semarine. Talaa Cafe is conveniently located for our Marrakech Riad Cinnmaon.

A good range of traditional Moroccan dishes, tagines, cous cous etc. There is a large and well stocked fridge full of cold drinks, very tempting in the Marrakech summer!

Friendly service and good food in a nice setting, no wonder this is becoming a favourite amongst visitors.

The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a UNESCO world heritage site accessible in a day trip from our Marrakech Riad hotels.

A prime example of a complete fortified village of traditional Berber earth construction comprising a look out tower, a mosque, a granary, a public square, a Fondouk (or caravanserai to accommodate passing merchants), and a variety of dwellings including Kasbahs and more modest houses. collectively known as a Ksar.  Communities of this type and construction date back to pre islamic times and were to be found across Southern Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya

The name of this particular settlement is derived from the tribal group of the inhabitants (Ait) and their family name (Ben Haddou) in arabic ‘ben’ means son or sons, indicating the Ksar was originally constructed by the sons of a leader called Haddou.

Ait Ben Haddu sits in a commanding position on a mountain side in the Southern Atlas. It has frequently been used to shoot movies perhaps partly because of its proximity to the town of Ourzazate home to several film studios.  Credits include Sodom and Gomorrah (1962) , Jesus of Nazareth (1977), Time bandits (1981), The Jewel of the Nile (1987), Gladiator (2000) for which a huge amphitheatre was constructed, Kingdom of Heaven (2005) and most recently Prince of Persia (2010).

The Ksar Ait Ben Haddou had almost been abandoned in favour of a new village on the other side of the river but an enlightened UNESCO investment in installing running water and a sewerage system (both completed in the last four years) has reversed the decline so that today ten houses are inhabited again.  There is still no mains electricity within the Ksar.

The staff at your Riad in Marrakech will be delighted to arrange your excursion to Ait Ben Haddou which we suggest you combine with a visit to the nearby historic Kasbah at Telouet.

The Tiskiwin Museum is a truly a hidden gem.

Tiskiwin was founded by  Bert Flint (a Dutch anthropologist who has been resident in Marrakech since 1957) to display the best of his personal collection of Amzigh berber artefacts.  Such is its importance that Tiskiwin is now part of the Marrakech  University Cadi Ayyad. The unassuming Mr Flint is still regularly present though it would be easy to miss him.

The collection is displayed as a journey along ancient Saharan trade routes from Marrakech to Timbuktu and back. On arrival visitors are offered the loan of comprehensive guide sheets which are available in several languages.  Visitors are directed first up the staircase of a Marrakech Riad (our boutique hotels are restorations of similar traditional courtyard homes).  The route leads round the first floor then down into the ground floor rooms and garden courtyard.

There are stunning displays of berber tents, art, carpets, fabrics, basketwork and the minutiae of every day life.  The ancient jewellery and personal adornment are particularly interesting.

Amazingly 90% of the museum quality pieces displayed at Tiskiwin were purchased in the souks of Marrakech, which remain to this day a treasure trove reflecting the wealth and diversity of African culture.

The museum is located just five minutes from our Riad Dar Habiba at 8 Rue de la Bahia. It’s opening hours are normally 9.30 to 12.30 and 14.30 to 18.00 and the entrance fee just 15 dirhams.

Not to be missed!

The second edition of ‘Marrakech du Rire’, the French and arabic language comedy festival takes place between the 6th and 10th of June 2012.

Where better to base yourself than a Riad in the Marrakech Medina.
