The Kingdom of Morocco will host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Football tournament in the face of strong competition from recent world cup hosts South Africa who will host the 2017 competition. Morocco last hosted the tournament in 1988.

The official opening of the new Stade de Marrakech sees a four way friendly football tournament on the the 5th January 2011. Two top French sides, Paris St Germain and Olympique de Marseille will participate as well as KACM of Marrakech and Widad of Casablanca. It is reported that his majesty the King of Morocco may be in attendance.
