Medina living is a very special experience with centuries old homes woven together in an intricate tapestry. In the Medina of Marrakech there is a huge variety of accommodation from modest houses to palaces, from the street it is almost impossible to guess what is behind each door.

A stay in a Riad in the Medina offers an opportunity to sample a very special atmosphere. Guests at our Marrakech Riads are particularly spoiled both by their comfortable surroundings and our fantastic staff.

In the old town of Marrakech fresh bread is readily available from many local bakeries.  Most commonly seen is the traditional round ‘pain du medina’ Medina bread. Since not all homes have ovens it is a common sight to see cakes or other items prepared at home and taken to the bakery to be cooked in the oven there.

Traditional Wood fired ovens are still in use and the bakery is open 24 hours a day. Medina bread can also be purchased from many small stalls and shops.

The bakery local to Marrakech Riad Papillon is at the top of Derb Tizougarine. If you are lucky you will see the regular flour delivery by mule and cart!

On January 19th the henna cafe association was honored by the presence of the Pasha of Marrakech who supported the Soup Kitchen by serving their 50,000th meal from the cafe.

There were two television crews including Morocco World News at the cafe to capture the moment and help support their efforts by spreading the word and encouraging donations to their ‘gofundme’ page. Click on this link below if you would like to donate: https://www.gofundme.com/f/henna-cafe-soup-kitchen   or get in touch with our team if you have any questions.

Alan Keohane, professional photographer and chairman of the British Business Association Marrakech, and Ahmed Nait, Director of Time Tours and member of the British Moroccan society were at the event to capture the moment and offer their support.

We would also like to thank Colin Bosworth of Bosworth Property, Marrakech who started donating food parcels to families and from whose roots the Soup Kitchen grew; Chantal from Pikala bikes for tirelessly distributing meals to the furthest reaches of the medina; Nutritionist Lin Ducker and other experts who have helped to create of our cost-effective and nutritious meals and the many neighbours and businesses who have contributed food and services to the Henna Cafe over the past two years.

We would also like to thank our team of both riad staff and Henna Cafe staff who have worked flexibly, diligently, and carefully throughout the past couple of years.

Finally we would like to thank you, our donors and supporters, without whom none of this would even be possible.

Would you like to join our support team?

1. Donating to our GOFUNDME page. As little as $2 buys 4 meals! $10 =20, $50 =100, $100 = around 200 meals!

2. Sharing this page with your contacts.

3. Donate excess nutritious food and kitchen implements, help with transport from wholesalers, food prep and cleaning etc.

4. Plan a trip to Morocco when travel becomes possible (very soon we hope) to help restart the trickle-down tourist economy here. If you are in Marrakech then drop into the Henna Cafe and say hello!

The Babouche is a traditional slipper found throughout the Arab-Muslim world. Usually made from leather and found in a variety of colours. The Babouche comes in various styles ranging from thick soled slippers. It is often worn by locals both in the Medina and in the new town. There are also more thin soled slippers designed for indoor wear.

Both styles are available for sale throughout Marrakech from the Souks to the Artisane ensemble. Although the Babouche is a very comfortable shoe and would make a great souvenir or gift, we suggest that maybe you choose sturdier footwear whilst walking around the Medina.

The main square or Jema el Fnaa has been the beating heart of Marrakech since the Red City was founded a thousand years ago.

Fnaa has two meanings in arabic, it can mean death, or it can mean courtyard.  Opinion is divided as to whether the square takes its name from the gruesome public display there of the heads of criminals in the middle ages or, perhaps more likely, from its distinctive open space.

There are some distractions in the square which have evolved for the amusement of tourists: colourful water sellers anxious to earn a few Dirhams posing for photographs in traditional costume; snake charmers; performing monkeys, and their masters clutching polaroid cameras. However, what is quite extraordinary is that the vast bulk of the teeming life in the square remains essentially local: dentists displaying teeth removed from previous clients; herb doctors laying out their wares; fortune tellers crouching over gas lamps; storytellers recounting the oral culture of Berber tribes in obscure dialects (UNESCO cited the oral heritage of the square when designating it a world heritage site); and musicians performing ancient gnawa trance rituals the origins of which predate modern language. The square also continues a centuries old tradition of acrobats, tumblers, jugglers, mime artists and other visual entertainers. No visit to Marrakech is complete without experiencing the Jema al Fna.

At night the atmosphere intensifies and the northern end of the Jema al Fna becomes a vast open air barbecue with rows of dozens of food stall competing for trade. Their hygiene standards can be criticised but the ambience is truly unique. A more conservative alternative to eating at the open air food stalls is to sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants around the perimeter many of which have balconies and terraces with views across the square.

Our Riads are located in the heart of the Medina, less than 10 minutes walk from the square. Get in touch today to book your holiday to Marrakech!

In 2016 a wonderful hidden space opened its doors to visitors for the first time. In the heart of the Medina lies a magical sanctuary, a complex of palaces set within a magnificent garden. A truly outstanding example of Islamic art, science and architecture.

This amazing garden is located just 5 minutes walk from our magical Marrakech Riads.

We invite you to #SayYesToMarrakech and discover even more of the red cities hidden treasures.

Gnaws are a group of musicians that descend from the dark-skinned slaves brotherhood from Ghana, Guinea and Mali several centuries ago. The Gnawa can be seen in Marrakesh and Essouira. Every year especially in May the town of Essaouira hosts a festival of Gnawa and world music. Here is a video about Gnawa in the heart of old Medina Jemma el-Fnaa square from 5 years ago. To discover more of Morocco please get in touch . The team at our magical Marrakech riads is really looking forward to welcoming you soon.

On Friday we served our 30,000th meal working with the Marrakechi people to ensure that 150 of the most needy people can have a nutritious meal.

We were delighted that Vanessa Branson of El Fenn joined with friends, staff and volunteers at the Henna Cafe to serve the 30,000th meal in person.

Vanessa is well known for her philanthropic work in Marrakech and beyond. She founded the Biennale Arts festival in Marrakech which has supported many local artists as well as being an attraction for art lovers all over the world. She renovated the beautiful El Fenn which is adorned with art pieces from local artists. She has also served on the British Moroccan Society for many years helping to support opportunities for social, cultural, educational, business and charitable activities between the UK and Morocco. In the UK she supports art workshops at her B&B on her beautiful Scottish island, Eilean Shona.

Vanessa not only helped to prepare the meals which was lovely support for our staff but she also accepted an offer to join with our transport partners Pikala bicyles and she delivered harira soup (flavoured with donated saffron) to the more inaccessible places within the medina.

Thank you to Vanessa for generously giving her time to visit us and offer her support. Everyone is very grateful.

We are all “Working together to make a difference.”

Welcome to Marrakech everyone. Here are my personal top 10 tips for your holiday:

10.  What I’m going to suggest first is this: make yourself mobile. Marrakech is actually not that small. It is a medieval wall city, but it would take you a good 40 minutes to walk across it. And there are a lot of very interesting things outside of the Medina. So in that context, I suggest hiring a bicycle, from somewhere like our friends at Pikala Bikes, or a Tuk-Tuk. Tuck- Tuck’s are tricycles, three wheeler motorbikes, which are operated by handicapped people here. Both by supporting Pikala and by hiring a tuck tuck, you’d be behaving very responsibly, helping the local community, but also just getting yourself mobile. So you can get out there and visit more of the palaces and gardens.

9. I’m a football supporter. I love watching my local team at home ( the famous Leicester City). Marrakech has a professional football club and there’s a wonderful modern stadium in Marrakesh, which is often used by the national team. It’s also been used for international tournaments. So the world club champions were crowned here twice. I think it’s just a great opportunity to get in touch with the local culture, go and watch a local game. Tickets can be bought from the club shop in the new town of Gueliz or our team at the riad can potentially help with that. It’s easy to look on the internet and check what the fixed schedule is and if it falls right for you, by all means, go and see a game.

8. Well, this is the first of my foodie oriented tip. Not going to conceal though, I do love the the food here. I love the cuisine, and it’s not by accident that we have a cookery school here and we’ve published a cookbook. So number eight tip is: during the Holy month of Ramadan, experience the breakfast meal at the end of the fast. You might be lucky enough to have the opportunity to be invited to do that with a family. You could do that in a restaurant; a lot of restaurants and cafes have a ftour  meal, or for a sort of blowout experience go to one of the top hotels, like Mamounia, Sofitel or one of the big international hotel brands. They have amazing buffets. It’s a great way of appreciating the culture and getting a wide variety of those specialist, sort of seasonal foods. A lot of them very sweet, a lot of them very rich which are not available at other times of the year. So typically you would break your fast with the soup which is quite a complete soup: it’s based on a sort of beef broth with vegetables and lentils and sometimes pasta, and that would be served with a date. And then there’s a particular sweet that comes with it called spakia, which is a baked sweet with honey and Sesame on it.  (Our Riad Cinnamon was the home of a very famous baker  who made, for a long time, the best spakia in Marrakech. And the oven itself was in the what’s now the Casablanca suite. And then it had a little shop around the corner on the Mouassine street).  And then perhaps a boiled egg, or there’d be lots of homemade yogurt, juices  and then onto a fish. And then ending up with sweets and desserts.

7.  Number seven is a street food. It’s a breakfast food and it’s called sfenj which is a local donut made with a dough, it’s deep fried in really hot fat. Yeah. It’s not a healthy food and they’re sold in little bunches tied together with a Palm leaf and typically would be dusted with some sugar  and sometimes cinnamon as well. And it’s just delicious with hot mint tea It’s a street food, and  you’ll  find it little shops, little boutiques especially in the morning, of course, because it’s a breakfast food here.

6. Number six is my favorite food stall in the square, in the main square. And it’s a gentleman called Mohammed El Krita, and he is doing the most amazing fried fish. It’s the closest thing  the Brits will get to fish and chips here.  But he’s doing calamari, he’s doing shrimp, he’s doing a whole variety of seafood, seasonal seafood. He would go and buy the whole catch from a fisherman. He’s supplying a variety of these deep fried fish and French fries, and then he does an aubergine dip with it. And he does a tomato based side that sits alongside it. It’s very easy to spot his stand because he isn’t trying to persuade anybody to sit there. He’s got the longest line in the whole of the food area of the main square. He’s actually stand number 14. Interestingly, like me, he’s a football supporter. So you won’t find him there on a day when there’s a big game. So if Moroccan national team is playing or Barcelona is playing or real Madrid, don’t go down to square and expect to find Mohammed El Krita there.

5. I suggest as number five, particularly in the heat of the summer, it can be a great fun to get out of town: either up to the Atlas mountains, which due to altitude, things are a bit cooler or down to (my particular favorite) would be to go down to the coast at Essaouira, which is a lovely little fishing port.

It used to be four hours drive from Marrakech, but the roads have improved so much that it’s really very viable now to get down there and two, or perhaps two and a half with a stop at one of the cooperatives on the way to pick up some argan oil or just check out the countryside. Really, it’s a beautiful little fishing port. It’s got a tiny Medina, very atmospheric, lovely beach. You can windsurf there. You can ride a camel on the beach, if that’s your thing, eat some lovely grilled sardines fresh from the fishing boats and a fantastic contrast to Marrakesh. So yeah, if you were here for, I would say more than perhaps three days why not take an excursion,

There a variety of options to get to Essaouira. There are public buses, you can go on a tourist mini bus or the luxury way, which to be honest, I would recommend, is to get a private car and driver for the day. That way you can set off when you want, you can stop when and where you want along the way, and it’s not crazy expensive.

4. My number four is a secret; or actually not such a well kept secret. And that is the secret garden. The secret garden opened about three years ago. It is much smaller than the more famous Majorelle garden, which is outside town. It’s located in the heart of the Medina, in the Mouassine district, really close to  Riad Spice, Riad Cinnamon and Riad Papillon. It is just the most magical quiet space. And within it, there is a cafe.  The secret garden is featured heavily on international television programs, so we’ve had prominent gardeners there and it’s a really interesting restoration too. There are two sections to it. There’s a sort of herb garden and then there’s a traditional botanical garden . you would buy a ticket on the door on the day.

3. Number three destination is actually currently closed for renovation. It should be opening again soon. I’m not going to be ambitious enough to give you a specific date, but it’s been closed for two years. It’s an amazing place: Ben Youseff mosque is the second oldest mosque in the Medina. It’s huge. It has attached to it a Quranic school, which is just an unbelievable building. It’s got the most incredible intricate woodcarving, plaster carving and decoration.  Next to it is the oldest building in Marrakesh: The Koubba barouidine which was the wash room of the original Ben Youseff mosque. When the renovation is finished it will be opened again to public. And for students of Islamic architecture, that’s just the most incredible building. Also as part of that complex, there are underwater caves where water was stored and you’ve got the arrival of the irrigation channels that brought water from the Atlas mountains. And this was the foundation of the city really. Water was important particularly here in these desert climate. So all of that culture and all that history is incredible and it’s right on our doorstep. And we’re so excited to see the renovation when it’s all finished at Ben Youseff.

Of course, with that particular location as with everything else that we talk about within the Medina you will be able to find it on the free Marrakech travel guide app, which you can download from your relevant app stores. And if you are visiting Marrakesh, it is worth having that on your phone, mainly for the map, because Google maps isn’t quite as useful as it is back home when you’re in Marrakesh. So downloading that app, which works offline too, will really help you get around and find some of these amazing places

2. So number two is a jazz bar. It’s located in the famous old Mamounia hotel and it is called Churchill’s bar. Winston Churchill came to Marrakech to relax and also to paint. He used the Mamounia hotel. He painted the Atlas mountains from the balcony of his room. And there’s a jazz bar, which is named after Churchill that he used a lot, it’s a really atmospheric space. It’s fantastic. And the music in there is great too. So I definitely recommend the jazz bar, Churchill’s bar in the Mamounia hotel.

1. A very personal choice. My favorite place in Marrakech at the moment is a little restaurant which might be my favorite restaurant in the world. It’s very unassuming, it’s an Italian restaurant. It is run by an Italian family that have been living in Morocco for three generations. The owner, Eric, is just a lovely guy, the warmth of the welcome has gotta be at least as important as the quality of the food. He does fantastic pasta of course. He does fantastic Italian dishes. He also has an Asian side to his menu. It’s modest, it’s humble, it’s reasonably priced and it’s just a place where I find I can relax.

Why do we need help?
The pause in tourism due to COVID 19 has been acutely felt in the medina of Marrakech. The Henna Café Soup Kitchen is a short term project but an urgent, time-sensitive one to prevent starvation and ill health especially of those most vulnerable in this wonderfully warm and resilient community.

In a developing country environment, marginalised people including the homeless, widows and their children, and some elderly and handicapped folk rely on the solidarity and generosity of neighbours who are currently struggling to make ends meet themselves.

What is the Henna Cafe doing to help?
Founded in 2011 the Henna Café Cultural Association operates a café where visitors can enjoy simple local cuisine and safe natural organic henna.  In normal times the profits from the café fund an education programme with up to 8 free classes every day.  Our motto is “Working together to make a difference!” In response to this crisis Henna Café has repurposed the classroom as a “soup kitchen” providing free nutritionally balanced meals to those in need.
49038818_160324658574153_r.jpeg
Free meals are distributed daily at the cafe after the evening prayer.  Our volunteers also deliver to those in need who are not mobile both within the city walls and to the surrounding areas with the kind help of our friends Pikala Bikes.

A typical meal comprises a large, freshly baked medina wholewheat bread roll filled with nutritious vegetarian tortilla (egg, seasonal vegetables, olive oil and pulses), our homemade energy bar (oats, butter, dates, nuts and seeds) and fresh fruit.

Every penny donated is spent on fresh ingredients. Buying at the wholesale markets food usually costs less than one dollar for each person that we help so you can be reassured even a small donation will make a difference.

We are currently providing more than a thousand free meals a week. Donations large or small do really help us to keep going.  The price of a Coffee could provide a meal for three or more people in need.

How can you help?

Morocco is slowly reopening to visitors, if you are able to come to Marrakech you will be warmly welcomed throughout the Red City, and of course at Henna Cafe.  If you are not able to travel at the moment please consider supporting this fundraiser either by donating or sharing on social media.

If you live in Marrakech please use Henna Café and be part of the change you wish to see in the world, or if you have time to spare, why not talk to us about volunteering.

The BBC World Service kindly made a short program about the Henna Cafe and our Soup Kitchen Project where Mike, Myself and Zouhair all discuss the project, its origins and progress. Thought you might like to hear it if you didn’t catch it already!

Three wise men followed the Star for an ITV festive special in Marrakech as Riad Star was honoured to host Gordon Ramsey, Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix in, ‘Gordon, Gino & Fred: Christmas Road Trip: Three Unwise Men’.

The traditional riad property is the final destination on a 6,000 culinary journey across Morocco in a festive edition of the popular show, Gordon, Gino And Fred’s Road Trip, produced for ITV by Studio Ramsay. The culmination of the journey sees the trio enjoy a bit of luxury as they check in to Riad Star. Here they use the riad’s cookery school to create a festive feast inspired by their travels, before enjoying the fruits of their labour in the December sunshine on the roof terrace.

Our Marrakech Riad team loved the challenge of working with the Ramsay Studios production team to plan and execute the shoot.  In practical terms it was not so different from helping all our guests make the most of Marrakech,  Everyone is a Star at Riad Star!

Set in the heart of the old town Medina, Riad Star was previously home to vaudeville star, singer and actress, Josephine Baker. The boutique property offers thirteen guest rooms and a traditional courtyard with dipping pool as well as a hammam and spa, cookery school and fabulous roof terrace.

Our street, Derb Said Ahansal, takes its name from an old and respected Marrakech family who moved into our Riad in the early 1600’s and lived here for seventeen generations.  Originally traders bringing camels across the Sahara they eventually settled and became farmers with land across the Marrakech region and elsewhere in Morocco.

The Ahansal family were expert at livestock husbandry and pioneered the introduction of milk and dairy products to the Marrakech Medina. They were also accomplished horsemen and leading participants in the Tabourida/fantasia.  The Souk at the head of our street is known as Baroudiyine, derived from Baroud, the musket used by Tabourida cavalry.

We are honoured to be the present day custodians of this historic building allowing our guests to enjoy a window onto an ancient city and culture. One of the key aspects of our hospitality is authentic, time honoured Marrakech cuisine.  We also offer cookery courses and have published a Marrakech Riad Cookbook.

There are ten individual suites at Riad Spice: GingerJuniper | NigellaPaprika  | Anise | Coriander | SaffronVanilla | Ras al Hanout  | Grains of Paradise

Ok, so the fasten seatbelt signs is off and everyone is rushing to get off the airplane even though the doors are not open yet… you are all anxious to experience Marrakech as soon as possible.

You enter terminal building and confused you steer towards passport control and think: ‘that is a long queue!’ ( before you get on that queue, make sure you get a landing card and fill it.) You would need to know the address of the riad you are staying and some other personal information. Quick and easy but you can’t join the queue if you have not filled that.

Then you wait and wait and think to yourself: ‘ how chaotic this country must be! ‘ . In their own way they are organized and efficient.

After you finally reach the police officer ( should be around 20-50 minutes if you are lucky ) they will stamp your passport and you are in Marrakech. Or not just yet, there is another guy as you walk out, checking that the police has stamped your passport, then you collect your check in bags and you run it through another scanner! Then, the doors open and as you walk towards the exit you get a glimpse of the newly built Marrakech Menara airport terminal: What a piece of work.

You start to see some people holding various signs! If you booked a transfer with us, head towards the exit, smile and say hi to the nice soldiers guarding the door and then as you breath in the hot Marrakech air, look for a driver holding your Riad’s sign. Very easy.

After you found him, you will get in and into the madness of Marrakech traffic. If you think it is chaotic and insane…well, you are right. Even so, you get comfortable, quick and safe to the nearest Medina gate where a welcoming member of our team will greet you, take you and your bags to the Riad and your adventure begins.

All we can say is: relax, enjoy and safe travels.

The name of this spice mix literally translates to “top of the shop” as it is made up of the best spices that each spice shop carries. One of our favorite ras al hanout shops in the medina features cloves, cardamom pods and seeds, nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, star anise, ash and cubeb berries, mace, and ginger root among other ingredients in its mix. We buy it by the kilo (half ground and half whole) right next door to the lovely Henna Cafe on Dar El Bacha.

Ras al hanout can be added to a wide variety of savoury dishes including beef or lamb tagine, couscous, tfaya, or rice with peppers. Check our recipes page to find out more or buy our Marrakech Riad Cookbook today!

The moroccan flat bread, the Medina bread or khobz is without a doubt the most ubiquitous food item in Morocco. If you eat three times a day, you eat khobz three times a day; if you eat five times a day, you eat khobz five times a day. This bread if always on the table and used in lieu of cutlery. Khobz bread is also used as a form of currency in Marrakech; one piece of khobz is worth one dirham.

Riad’s—traditional Moroccan homes—are the perfect destination for yoga groups. The intimate layout, the rooftop terrace, and the relaxing dipping pool of our Riad Star offer a gorgeous backdrop to any yoga retreat. Our in-house chefs are happy to prepare fresh, nourishing food for the body and mind and our live-in staff is always on hand to reassure and guide you throughout your stay in the Medina. Our 13 Riad Star Suite’s can be made up as twins (and some rooms can sleep up to 6) so that every guest is comfortable. All rooms are en suite, and the exclusive use of the Riad ensures that the staff can adjust to your specific needs: that means meals can be served at any time of day to accommodate any dietary restrictions. Our in-house spa and hammam feature a talented masseuse who is always on hand to alleviate muscle strain and relax or energize you and your guests.
We at Marrakech Riad are also proud to offer a variety of essential yoga equipment to any guests. There is no need to ship over bulky equipment or adjust your practice to less equipment being available; we’ve got it all! Read below to find out more about our yoga cupboard…
The YOGA MAT is the single most important piece of equipment for any practicing yogi, and here at Marrakech Riad, we have tons of mats that are available for our guests to use free of charge. Whether you are a yoga teacher, an advanced yogi, or just a guest looking to try out something new, you are more than welcome to request a mat to use during your stay.
Our mats are of the highest quality to ensure the right amount grip and cushioning during your yoga practice.
Our BLANKETS come in handy for all sorts of poses. We love placing one under the hips when in a cross-legged seating position or using them to stay cozy during a Shavasana.
Our foam BLOCKS help with alignment in a variety of poses. Try using one during a pose that requires you to touch the floor. Propping your hand on a block can help improve overall comfort, form, and alignment by “raising the floor.”
We have YOGA STRAPS to help with poses where you need some extra help to get the right stretch. Straps are great because you can use them to get closer and closer to a full stretch without straining the body or resorting to poor form.
We have round BOLSTERS available for our guests as well, which make tons of poses more comfortable. We especially encourage pregnant women to use bolsters during their practice as they greatly increase overall comfort and ease during a yoga practice.
We at Marrakech Riad are pleased to offer our guests with these supplies, and enjoy hosting large yoga groups at our four magical Riads. Book your stay today!

As you walk the streets of Marrakech, you won’t just find humans working, but donkeys, too. Donkeys are essential to the Marrakshi work force, especially in the Old Town. The streets of the Medina are so narrow, that oftentimes workers at building sites are unable to transport their materials with anything other than a donkey-drawn carriage. Therefore, you will see these furry friends all over the place.

Many tourists see the working donkeys and are saddened to see that they have such heavy loads or are being pestered by flies. But donkey owners completely depend on their donkeys for their income. Donkeys provide jobs. In order to keep working in transport and other jobs, most donkey owners take good care of their animals. Vets are available including a charity called SPANA who operate a clinic in Marrakech. A British run charity Jarjeer operate refuge for mules and donkeys.
